 SCOTTISH FUTSAL  News 09.04.08

A Grass Roots team successfully defended for the third time the Scottish Futsal Championship . All the teams played well despite the 7 hour coach journey to Perth where the championship was held.

Well done to AV IT who won the 13-17 age group only conceding 2 goals all the way through the tournament and playing quality football. Well done also to Shane Underwood for getting player of the tournament for that age group.
Congratulations to EAST HULL TIGERS who won the 9-12 age group in this their first competative futsal competition also only conceding 2 goals with Jack Wade getting top goal scorer.
CITY REDS played well in the early stages but the 7 hours travelling and several injuries saw them get knocked out in the semi final stage but Dom Bird still managed to pick up 13-17 top goal scorer award.
LIONS and ALLSTARS both got through their group stages but fell at the quarter final stage.
BRANSHOLME who found it hard going at first still managed to get into the plate final and should have won if missed chances could have been converted.

 SUBS  News 24.03.08

All teams who did not pay their subs last week 17/3 will have three points deducted and will go up in multiples of 3 each time they affend. Grass Roots is the one of the cheapest if not the cheapest leagues in Hull. Other leagues impose fines or pay for both teams the following week "Grass Roots does not !!"
As you can appreciate we run on a very tight budget even the loss of 1 team means we are having to find the pitch hire from other places and stops us providing things like presentation nights and trophies.

As from 31/3/08 all teams in every league must pay subs to either Frank, John or Andy before their game starts. NO SUBS NO GAME! The minorty have spoilt it for the rest.

Can all monies for the Scotland trip be paid in before the 28/3 please thanks.

A new season of futsal will be starting on the 27/3 at Gemtec/KYC any teams who would like to join this ever growing style of football and the chance to go to places like Perth/Scotland and Barcelona contact Frank, John or Andy.

Good luck to all teams!

 Hull Futsal Open  News 08.08.07

On Saturday 4th August we were invited to play in the Hull futsal open tournament at the Gemtec arena. The teams were 16+ and we had 3 which were City Knights Av it and City All Stars, they played teams (grown men) which are well seasoned, either play in the FPL (futsal premiership league), have been in various tournaments and have been runners up or winners, in fact one of the teams won this tournament last year. So the standard of the futsal was very high, and our lads held their own, with Av It getting to the quarter finals, only to get beat in the last 5 seconds by Chippenham, and knocking them out would have been one of the biggest upsets in English futsal.

So well done to Av It for nearly creating a big upset, and well done to the other teams for being a part of this tournament.

We Came We Saw We Conquered AGAIN!  News 23.04.07

Perth 4th Annual Youth Futsal Championship

On Friday 6th April 3 grass roots teams travelled up to Scotland to take part in the 4th Annual Perth Youth Futsal Championship (this was won by our very own Grass Roots Team City Knights last year). The 3 teams this year were, Red Devils, Pickering All Stars, and the Lions 12 – 14 age group. The other teams were PYF Samba All-stars and Samba Boys from Scotland and GP Asprou from Cyprus there were supposed to be other teams involved from various places but were unable to make it this year.

Red Devils 7 v 2 Lions
Pickering all-stars 1 v 3 GP Asprou
PYF Samba All-stars 6 v 2 Samba Boys
GP Asprou 9 v 1 Samba Boys
Red Devils 13 v 0 Pickering All-stars
Red Devils 3 v 0 GP Asprou
PYF Samba All-stars 5 v 2 Pickering All-stars
Lions 6 v 1 Samba Boys
Red Devils 11 v 0 Samba Boys
Red Devils 4 v 4 Pickering All-stars
PYF Samba All-stars 0 v 2 Red Devils
Lions 7 v 3 GP Aprou
Samba Boys 3 v 3 Pickering All-stars

The games were played over the Friday evening and the Saturday, all the grass roots teams played exceptionally well and showed some outstanding skills on the pitch, which they had to deliver because of the quality of the opposition Cyprus had never bean beaten until red devils beat them and literally left the Cyprus team in tears, again with the Scottish team Samba All-stars being the team red devils had to beat to clinch the title (samba all-stars their best team!!) this game was a hard fought game with passions running high on both sides, it was 0-0 with about 3 mins to go on a number of occasions Samba all-stars caught us on the break but our keeper kept us in the game (more than once) but red devils (Mikey) broke through to slam on home in the corner. Frank then brought on Tom and with his fresh pair of legs straight away struck the ball and scored their second goal which immediately seemed to take away the spirits of the Scottish side, the final whistle went and the scenes were amazing with all the grass roots players and staff running on to the pitch, after which when everything calmed down left Frank the coach an emotional wreck!!

At one point during the game against Cyprus, their manager and coaches every time they scored ran on to the pitch to hug and celebrate with their players, SO coach Frank arranged that when we played Cyprus and scored we would ALL (26 people) run on to the pitch to have our own celebration with our players. No one could believe what they were seeing leading to the referee coming over to Frank to ask who the manager and subs were, so he could yellow card them the referee said “I don’t mind 5 or 6 coming on to the pitch like Cyprus, but when 26 people invade the pitch and we have to stop the game I have to do something”.

At the presentation which was held at St Johnston’s sports club where we were presented our medals AND trophy the referee did say he saw the funny side of the pitch invasion which he had to admit he had never seen anything like it!!!

We have been invited back next year to defend our title. As Frank said “we came we saw we conquered” AGAIN.

Grass Roots were invited and attended the Football Assosiations regional key stakeholder event 'Your Game Your Say'. We were able to have 'our say' on how the F.A are going to develop a new national game strategy leading up to the 2012 Olympics.

This was a great opportunity to talk to different football and sporting organisations from across the region and also key members from the F.A about how 'Grass Roots' football plays a major part in football. Sir Trevor Brooking was in attendance and we managed to have a quick word, we also got a football which we got signed by the great man himself, which we are holding on to for the time being!

 FUTSAL Success

We took 2 teams to Perth in Scotland for the 3rd Annual Perth Youth Futsal Tournament on Saturday 12th August we are the first English teams to ever play in this tournament, we had City Knights and Dane Park Devils, after a long 7 hour drive to Scotland we arrived at the Bells Sports Centre. Both our teams played a number of games playing well seasoned Futsal teams from Scotland, we were due to play a team named Santos from republic of Georgia, unfortunately due to the chaos at the airports the team was unable to make it.

Our teams played 6 games each, with City Knights winning all 6, with the best result being 23 - 1 (to us of course!!), Dane Park Red Devils won 5 out of 6 only losing to City Knights. Overall City Knights came first and Dane Park came 2nd!! I don't think the Scottish teams thought the trophy was going to be leaving Scotland.

I think it is fair to say that all teams we played and the tournament organisers ere more than surprised at the skill level of ALL our players and their level of commitment (remember this is only the 3rd time they have played futsal together) it was even more surprising after their 7 hour trip, they all worked extremely well together in their teams, a big CONGRATULATIONS to all, well done lads, we are all really proud of you.

Just want to say a BIG thank you to Steve from the Perth Futsal for inviting us in the first place, it was an honor to be able to represent England, also thank you for your hospitality and thanks to all the Scottish teams who really made us feel welcome.

Last but not least THANK YOU to Mike the bus driver who gave up his time to drive all the lads up to Scotland.

www.futsal.org.uk
 FUTSAL

Over the weekend 5th & 6th August some of our teams were invited to play in a Futsal tournament held at the Gemtec arena, on Saturday our very own Pythons came up against well seasoned futsal teams from Brazil, Portugal, Albania to name but a few, although Pythons lost they played some outstanding football even the coach from Grimsby said so!

Never mind Pythons we are all still proud of what you achieved, well done.

On Sunday it was the turn of our under 14's teams Grass Roots A (City Knights) and Grass Roots B (Dane Park) they played teams from Grimsby, Scotland and Leeds. Again the teams Grass Roots played have been playing Futsal for some time. Our teams had 4 games each and Grass Roots A came second overall winning 3 out of 4 games, the team they lost to Perth (Scotland) was a close game losing 2-1, and it was Perth who won the tournament, Grass Roots B also played extremely good football coming up against some excellent opposition, ending with a great win 3 - 0 against Leeds.

Very well done.

We are hoping to go up to Scotland on the 12th August to play in the 3rd Annual Perth Youth Futsal Tournament. We will report more soon.

 Richard Gravill Memorial Tournament Report

Grass Roots Sports in partnership with Amicus the Union held the Richard Gravill Memorial tournament at the Gemtec arena, although it was a wet and windy day we are very pleased to say all teams turned up we started with 16 teams and had to extend this to 20 teams. We had all sorts of things planned for the day i.e football skills, beat the goalie and competitions, and unfortunately due to the BAD weather these had to be cancelled.

We had 2 tournaments the under 16 and the under 14, in the under 16’s it was Av It and Barmy Army in the final with Barmy Army winning the match on penalties, in the under 14’s for the 2nd tournament in a row North Hull United came out winners again. Everyone received medals and there were trophies for the winners.

We would just like to say thankyou for all teams who again conducted themselves very well, and thank you to everyone who came and supported the day. Last but not least a BIG THANK YOU to all the referees who gave up their spare time (Saturday afternoon) to volunteer their services.

We would just like to wish Carol and her family all the best for the future, from all at Grass Roots Sports.

Pictures are to follow.

 Peel Street World Cup

Grass Roots were very pleased to be involved with a new project called sporting futures, who organised a football tournament at the Peel street playing fields, Spring bank. Grass Roots were very pleased to provide 16 teams for the tournament which was under 14 and under 16, it was the hottest day of the year and by the time Frank had finished refereeing he walked off with sun stroke and a blistering head!!

There were 4 pitches going and on all 4, all matches were highly fought, which was wittled down to a semi final and the eventual final in both age categories. The under 14 finalists were North Hull and City Knights with City Knights taking the crown, which was well deserved.

Under 16 finalists were Unreal Madrid and Pythons again another well fought final, with Pythons just scraping the win, If England were to have the same passion, enthusiasm and team work as Pythons showed in their game they might just win the World Cup. Although nothing is to be taken away from the other teams involved in the tournament, every one showed passion, teamwork and enthusiasm.

We would like to take this opportunity to praise all other teams from other areas for their sporting behaviour through out the tournament, and just to finish we would like to say thank you to Tony for an enjoyable well run tournament, and if there are any more coming up please let us know.

Again thank you to the Grass Roots referees who gave up their spare time for this tournament.

Pictures to follow.
